The Mesa is a physical representation of yourself and your relationships. It is your sacred healing altar. At its simplest manifestation, it is a collection of symbols that are meaningful to you. These symbols are physical objects that you are drawn to or have some personal meaning for you. They are imbued with power which, when used skilfully, can become a catalyst for healing and harmonious growth. The objects are then arranged in a mesa (literally a field or a table) in a framework that allows you to use these objects as a map or a tool to explore awareness.
Within the Q'ero tradition of Peru the Mesa is used by medicine people to intecede with the forces of Nature on behalf of members of their community for the purpose of bringing balance and planetary harmony. My approach to the Mesa is to help people use it as a mirror. Once one has become comfortable working with one's Mesa, it's usage will become more defined, complex and wholly personal.
It can be as simple as a representation of the qualities of the four directions or the five elements. It can be complex - as if it were an accurate map of the layers of reality with ourselves precisely located within the representation of time and space. As a tool, it will expand and contract to represent our own soul's journey.
